Historically the use of 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steel has been adopted by the Food & Dairy, Beverage, Water and Pharmaceutical industries as the ‘materials of choice’ for all equipment and pipe runs, without further thought given to any alternatives.  The satisfactory performance of these two materials and acceptable price levels didn’t warrant the necessity to look elsewhere.

The Oil and Gas and Chemical industries however had already discovered there were viable alternatives decades earlier predominantly in the form of C-276 (UNS N10276) that offered a better solution, mainly longevity of components and its resistance to corrosion, but carried a high price that often ruled it out for main stream use.

Then along came the materials of 2205 and AL-6XN, filling the sizable void between the mass produced 316L and the expensive C-276.  These Super-austenitic and Duplex materials with higher chromium and molybdenum contents result is an affordable material with superior resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion.

To grade the pitting resistance and fully understand where these materials sit in relation to each other a pitting index called the Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) was developed.
