Metal Polishing
Finishes From Descaled To 0.10 Ra
Precision Metal Polishing
Axium offers a complete range of surface finish options including manual polishing, electropolish and bead-blast. From mirror finish to dull polish, our core expertise is in high-specification precision polishing, we are one of the few companies that process stainless steel and associated metals to a specific surface finish and precise dimensional tolerance.
Process control
Manufacturing pharmaceutical, biotech and other specialist components involves careful planning, so that hygienic surfaces which become inaccessible on the finished article are still in compliance. In such cases a component could pass between manufacturing and polishing several times before it is finished. At each stage it is essential to meet the target specifications for surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Qualified inspection engineers using calibrated measuring equipment document the appropriate evidence so detailed reports and comprehensive certification packs can accompany the completed item.
Materials control
To conform with the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and FDA requirements for TSE Compliance Certification (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy) all polishing compounds and cutting oils used at Axium Process are certified animal by-product free.
Bead blast
Different grades of abrasive beads can be used in our blast cabinet to achieve a wide variety of surface finish options.
Weld Dressing
Internal and external welds are ground to match the parent metal surface and become completely invisible, many of our fabricated components appear to be made from a single piece!
Electropolishing
Axium’s on-site electropolishing service is used for many applications throughout the pharmaceutical, food, beverage and aerospace industries
SURFACE MEASUREMENTS
NOMINAL GRIT | RA MEASUREMENT | TYPICAL APPLICATIONS AND TECHNIQUES | |
---|---|---|---|
Micron (micrometer) | Micro-inch | ||
80 | 2.5 | 100 | Dull polish – applicable for tube, bends and tees in general food processing subject to daily cleaning in place (CIP). Normal abrasive techniques achieve this. |
100 | 1.2 | 48 | |
120 | 1.0 | 40 | |
150 | 0.8 | 32 | Satin polish – used by high end food and beverage plants, cosmetics, toiletries and with standard pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications. Easier to CIP. Sequential use of abrasives is required. |
180 | 0.6 | 24 | |
240 | 0.5 | 20 | |
320 | 0.4 | 16 | Bright polish – Top end pharmaceutical (water for injection), high value biotechnology materials, semi-conductors, solvents and pure gases. Abrasives plus electropolishing normally required. |
500 | 0.1 - 0.2 | 4 - 8 |
